Why these two companies
American Express is drawing fresh attention after a Piper Sandler price-target hike on Wednesday, August 13, 2026, following its beat-and-raise second-quarter report, while Visa keeps trading within a couple of percent of its own record high after a run of analyst target increases this month. Both premium payment networks are now in focus as U.S. credit-card balances hit new records, sharpening the debate over which network's business model is better positioned for the current consumer-credit backdrop.
The research
Visa runs the payment network that lets your card talk to your bank when you swipe or tap, earning a small fee on every transaction without ever lending you money directly. American Express does both: it issues its own cards and also lends money to many of its cardholders, so it earns fees plus interest, but that also means it's exposed if people struggle to pay their bills.
One reason to like Visa right now is that it just posted strong growth and its stock is sitting near an all-time high, and because it doesn't lend money directly, it tends to be less affected by consumer credit problems. One reason to like American Express is that it just beat earnings expectations, raised its outlook for the year, and got a price-target boost from at least one Wall Street analyst afterward, even though its stock is still notably below its own high point.
Something to keep in mind: total U.S. credit-card debt just hit a record $1.26 trillion, and because American Express directly lends to its customers, rising debt and any pickup in missed payments would hit it more directly than Visa, which mainly profits from how much people spend rather than whether they pay their bills on time.
Both are well-known, widely held stocks, and their next quarterly reports will be an important test: American Express already has a confirmed date in late October, while Visa hasn't announced its exact date yet.
